Duchess of Cornwall takes on royal role formerly held by Meghan

The Duchess of Cornwall has been named royal patron of the National Theatre taking on a role formally held by Meghan Markle before her and Prince Harry stopped being working royals.

The pair quit their royal duties in 2020 in a bid for personal and financial freedom, and have since signed multi-million pound deals with Netflix and Spotify.

They also famously sat down for a TV interview with Oprah Winfrey where their claims of racism and a lack of support plunged the royal family in crisis.

A former actress, the Duchess of Sussex was supporter of the theatre and published photographs on her Instagram account from one of her visits to the Southbank institution where she was told about how the theatre used virtual reality in its work.

National Theatre director Rufus Norris said: “It is a privilege to welcome The Duchess of Cornwall as the National Theatre’s Royal Patron. The Duchess shares our belief that theatre enriches our lives in so many ways and that everyone should have access to the arts and creativity no matter where they are in the world.

“The Duchess has shown great support to our industry throughout the pandemic, and I look forward to working with Her Royal Highness for many years to come. I would also like to express my thanks to The Queen for Her Majesty’s long and unwavering support and service to the National Theatre.”
