Dubliners urged to walk together for friends and neighbours living with Alzheimer’s

Dubliners are being urged to join walk to support people during World Alzheimer’s Month 2022.

An estimated 16,967 people live with dementia in Dublin, and 64,000 people suffer from the disease in Ireland. This figure is expected to more than double to 150,000 in the next 25 years.

The Alzheimer’s Memory Walks take place on September 18 and are suitable for all ages and abilities. The Alzheimer's Society of Ireland hopes to raise €250,000 for vital services that help to support the many people with dementia and their family carers across Ireland.

You can choose where you walk, or you can join the walks in Dun Laoghaire, St. Anne’s Park or Shelbourne Football Club. It’s €8 for kids and €20 for adults.

Local Champion, Siobhan O’Connor said: “The ASI really depends on the funds that Alzheimer’s Memory Walk generates to ensure our support services are maintained; crucial supports such as day care, home care, dementia advisers, family carer training, Alzheimer Cafes and social clubs.”

Community Officer for Shelbourne Football Club, John McGouran, added: “This year, we are walking for all of our dear friends and neighbours who are living with dementia. After our walk, we will host a very special 'Football Memories' event in Tolka Park as we reminisce about some of the greats to have played the game. It will be a terrific afternoon of exercise, activity and fundraising.”

Here’s how you can participate in local walks:
