Dubliner Rhasidat Adeleke wins gold medal at NCAA Championships with record run

Rhasidat Adeleke made history yesterday after winning gold at the NCAA Championships in Texas.

Breaking her Irish 400m record once again, the Dubliner becomes the first Irish sprinter to win a NCAA title after securing gold with a meet-record time of 49.20. This was Adeleke's seventh national record this year.

The athlete also smashed the Irish 200m record with a time of 22.34 back in April. This time around, Adeleke was competing on her home track at the University of Texas. She said after the race: "[The race] was kind of a blur, I just went out trusting myself.

"I'm not really sure what I went through the 200 [mark], I just put myself into position coming into the home stretch, and it was the kick at the end, which is something I've been doing well all season."

The 20-year-old is now in the top 20 on the World 400m all-time list following her latest success , which was Ireland's first NCAA win since Mary Cullen won 5000m gold for Providence College in 2006.

Tánaiste Micheál Martin congratulated the Irish athlete on social media. He wrote on Twitter: "Congratulations Rhasidat Adeleke on another Irish 400m record. Superb run and victory. Everyone in Ireland so proud of all you are achieving."
