Dublin weather: Met Eireann winter storm names for this year revealed

Antoni, Betty, Cillian and Daisy are among the storms that will cross Ireland this winter, Met Eireann has revealed.

Irish weather bosses have teamed up with their counterparts in the UK and the Netherlands to create the list. The names are usually given to storms that warrant an orange or red alert warning from today until August 31, 2023.

The full list is Antoni, Betty, Cillian, Daisy, Elliot, Fleur, Glen, Hendrika and Íde and Johanna. We will also be hearing about Khalid, Loes, Mark, Nelly, Owain, Priya, Ruadhan, Sam, Tobias, Val and Wouter.

Met Eireann’s head of forecasting Evelyn Cusack joked: “If you’re disappointed your name didn’t appear, maybe next year. There will be lots of storms to come over the years. There’s a new list published every year.

“Some people would love to be named after a storm and some people wouldn’t because it can cause damage and destruction. When we issue the names everything is fine and it’s nice to have some light chats about it but during the winter season we’ll only actually name a storm when we expect really severe weather.”

Will Lang, of the UK Met Office said the severe weather systems are named for a reason. He added: “We know from seven years of doing this that naming storms works.

“Last year, Storms Arwen and Eunice brought some severe impacts to the UK and we know that naming storms helps to raise awareness and give the public the information they need to stay safe in times of severe weather. Recent impactful storms demonstrated our ongoing need to communicate severe weather in a clear way to help the public protect themselves. Naming storms is just one way that we know helps to raise awareness of severe weather and provides clarity for the public when they need it most.”
