Dublin weather: Met Eireann pinpoints exact date of 'very cold' Arctic blast with snow showers

Met Eireann has warned that it will be "very cold" this coming week, with a risk of snow on the cards from Wednesday onwards as an Arctic blast is set to engulf the country.

Today is set to be a cloudy, cool day but from Monday wintry conditions will be felt across the country as a passing flow of lower-temperature air will cause subzero temperatures. According to Met Eireann, mist, fog, frost, subzero temperatures, ice and wintry showers are on the way for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday.

The national forecaster has indicated that there is currently some “uncertainty” for later in the week, as milder air possibly moves in from the south west. However, latest forecasts indicate rain could fall in many areas in the south on Wednesday, which will fall as sleet or snow as it meets the cold air over the country.

They said: “Very cold until at least Thursday with frost, ice and some possible wintry falls. Some uncertainty to the midweek detail however."

Meanwhile, Independent forecaster Alan O'Reilly of Carlow Weather also warned that weather models are "messy" at the moment, with a risk of snow particularly on Wednesday. He wrote on Twitter this morning: "A cool and mainly dry but cloudy morning with the odd shower.

"Very messy weather model ensembles with uncertainty still beyond Wednesday. A risk of snow for a time Wednesday though so keep updated on the forecasts."

Meanwhile, Mr O'Reilly also warned that a teeth-chattering wind chill of up to -8C will hit Ireland on Tuesday morning, a weather expert has warned. He wrote that Tuesday morning's windchill will be a shock to the system" but also warned the public to keep "a close eye" on weather forecasts for next week.

Giving its overall forecast for the week of March 6 to March 12, Met Eireann said: “Low pressure systems nearby are set to dominate through Week 1 with a predominately northerly airflow, becoming southwesterly at times. It will be colder than normal, especially away from the southwest. Rainfall amounts will generally be below normal with the exception of the northwest which will be more prone to showers in the northerly airflow.

“Colder than average conditions could lead to some wintry hazards, especially frosty nights though icy conditions are not expected to due below average rainfall," they added.

Here's Met Eireann's latest forecast for Dublin for the coming days:

Sunday night

"Some scattered showers will occur tonight with mist and fog forming in parts too, all with just light westerly breezes. Rather cold with lowest temperatures of -1 to +3 degrees with a slight frost where clear skies persist.

Monday

"Monday will be cool and cloudy with outbreaks of rain sinking southwards. Some possible early morning sunshine possible too though. Highest temperatures of just 7 or 8 degrees in light to moderate northwesterly breezes.

Monday night

"Long clear spells will develop as the last of the rain clears southern counties early in the night. Very cold with lowest temperatures of 0 and -4 degrees leading to widespread sharp frost and possible icy stretches. Wintry showers will later move into north facing coasts later, in a mostly light northerly airflow.

Tuesday

"Very cold as an Arctic airflow feeds down but with plenty of sunshine too, and with just light northerly breezes. Some well scattered sleet or snow showers will stream into the north and northwest but with a lot of dry weather elsewhere. Highest temperatures will range just 3 to 6 degrees with light to moderate northerly breezes.

"A few wintry showers will continue near northern coasts overnight, while staying dry and clear elsewhere. Another icy cold night with a widespread sharp or severe frost in sub-zero temperatures.

Wednesday

"A very cold frosty start with possible ice, but with a good deal of dry bright sunshine about too. Many areas will stay dry for the day in moderate east to southeast winds. During the afternoon however, cloud and wintry rain may feed into the southwest.

"Highest temperatures will again range just 3 to 6 degrees. Some uncertainty after-dark but wintry outbreaks may continue to feed up from the southwest with possible widespread wintry falls. Cold with lows of -2 to + 2 degrees."
