Met Eireann has forecasted a few days of mild weather before a huge change is set to hit.

The next few days will see mild temperatures will sunny spells and light rain in a brief respite before sub-zero temperatures hit. The mercury is set to drop to freezing this weekend with widespread frost expected.

Today will be breezy and dry at first with a mix of cloud and sunny spells. The afternoon will see a few light showers as the temperatures will be around 8 or 9 degrees.

Tonight will be cloudy with some patchy drizzle and the lowest temperatures of 5 to 7 degrees. There will be mist and hill fog.

There will be a good deal of cloudy tomorrow with just the occasional bright and sunny spells. It will be mostly dry apart from a little patchy rain with the highest temperatures of 9 or 10 degrees.

There is no further forecast for Dublin but here's what the national outlook says:

Thursday night

A Met Eireann forecaster said: "Occasional outbreaks of rain and drizzle will mainly affect the north and west on Thursday night. It will be a frost-free night with lowest temperatures of 7 to 9 degrees in moderate west to southwest winds.

Friday

"Rather cloudy again on Friday with patches of light rain and drizzle, mainly in the west, with the sun breaking through occasionally further east. Highest temperatures of 10 to 12 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds.

Saturday

"After a dry start, a spell of rain is expected on Saturday, moving southeastwards across the country. It will introduce a colder northwesterly wind in its wake. Temperatures in the daytime of 9 or 10 degrees over Ulster and Connacht and 11 or 12 degrees for Munster and Leinster, will give way to sub-zero temperatures Saturday night with a widespread frost setting in. Some mist and fog patches will develop too as the winds ease light and variable.

Sunday and Monday

"Current indications suggest that Sunday and Monday will be mainly dry days with some sunny spells, and although Sunday is expected to be a cold day, with frost after dark, it will turn slightly milder again on Monday."
