Dublin schoolboy club celebrating as former player called up by South Africa

Dublin schoolboy giants St Kevin’s Boys are celebrating a “great day” - with one former player receiving his first senior South Africa call-up.

Katelego Mashigo had been drafted into a provisional 32-strong squad for this month’s COSAFA Cup, an annual tournament for teams from the southern half of the continent.

South Africa are this year’s hosts and reigning champions, and have received a bye to the quarter-finals along with African Cup of Nations winners Senegal.

They will face Mozambique on July 13 in the last-eight, where a win could set up a semi-final with Senegal.

On Friday they confirmed that Mashigo, who was raised in Dublin and spent four years with St Kevin’s, had made the cut and was included in the final 23-man squad.

Mashigo also lined out for Bohemians, Waterford United and Athlone Town. He is currently with Irish League side Portadown.

St Kevin’s Boys PRO Neil Fox pointed out that Mashigo’s call-up wasn’t the only piece of big news for the club on Friday.

“Josh Keeley played for us and he has just moved from St Pat’s to Tottenham,” Fox told Mirror online.

“Darragh Burns was with us as well and he is on his way to MK Dons. And Gavin Kilkenny is one of ours too.”

Kilkenny is all set to secure a loan move from Premier League newcomers Bournemouth to Stoke City.

“It’s a great day for the club,” said Fox.

St Kevin’s Boys has an incredible record for bringing through future senior internationals - including Liam Brady, Damian Duff, Robbie Brady, Jeff Hendrick, Dara O’Shea, Jack Byrne, Ian Harte, Stephen Carr and Alan Maybury.
