Dublin's tallest building proposed at site of former City Arts Centre

Dublin's tallest building could be built at the site of the former City Arts Centre under a planning application lodged with Dublin City Council.

The plans outline a 24-storey structure with a height of 108m. The second tallest building at planning stage is the 30-storey residential tower set for Parkgate Street, which would be 10m lower than development at the City Arts Centre.

The proposed development will be dominated by office space - with over 22,000sq m - but the site's history will recognised with 1,400sq m of artist studios and performance/exhibitions space. Not much has happened at the site at the corner of City Quay and Moss Street in the city centre since the City Arts Centre moved out in 2003.

The iconic City Arts Centre's neon sign is set to be used by the developer at the entrance to the new building. The City Arts Centre was founded in 1973 before being liquidated in 2012 and occupied a number of premises across Dublin during that time.

The Grapevine Arts Centre, as it was originally called, was setup to provide a cultural space for working class teenagers in Dublin in the economically bleak 1970s. U2 contributed to the project which gave space to teenagers for band practice.
