Dublin residents slam 'tenement' conditions after being left with no water for four days

A group of Dublin residents have spoken out after being left without water since Wednesday morning.

The families in Killarney Court complex have been using litre bottles and an emergency pump for several days now.

The residents have compared their current living situation to like that of the Dublin tenement buildings, saying running water is a human right.

Many elderly people and those suffering with various illnesses cannot shower in their homes.

Kathleen Jones is one of the frustrated Dublin 1 residents. She told Dublin Live that she cannot stop crying and feels she shouldn't have to be using litre bottles to flush toilets after living in the complex for decades.

She said: "It's a nightmare. We have had no water here since 7:20 am on Wednesday morning. There are 106 apartments in here.

"We can't wash ourselves, can't have a shower, can't go to the toilet.

"It's like living in a third world country.

"I've been buying the five litre bottles of water and I must have bought twenty of them since the other day.

"You can't even do a bit of washing.

"It takes two five litre bottles to flush the toilet. I'm feeling frustrated because I have medical problems. I am meant to shower everyday and I have diabetes.

"There are a lot of elderly people here too.

"I'm here twenty years and this is the second time this has happened. Nobody has water, 106 residents.

"This is 2022 not 1922. It's like going back to the olden days where we lived in the tenements.

"It's against our human rights not to have running water. It might be alright for 24 hours but it's not alright for four-five days."

A spokesman for Irish Water said: "Repairs were carried out to separate burst water mains in the area on Thursday and Friday.

"Water should now be restored to all affected properties. If any customers continue to experience issues they should contact Irish Water’s customer contact centre at 1800 278 278."

Dublin Live have contacted Clúid Housing for comment.
