Dublin pub offers punters 20% off food if they bring their own coat as it turns off heat one day a week amid energy crisis

Punters who chill in a Dublin pub will get a 20% discount off food after the boozer announced they will not turn up the heating on Tuesdays.

Doyle's Corner announced the unorthodox energy-saving idea on social media and blamed the rising cost of coal.

The well-known watering hole in Phibsborough has encouraged pub-goers to bring their coat with them and will leave the heating off for every Tuesday in October.

The pub’s co-owner Ronan Flood said: “Doyle's Corner is a big listed building and it is really difficult to heat.

“This a promotion in which we are inviting our guests to ‘chill with us every Tuesday’ as we turn the heat down a little.

“In return for bringing your own coat, we are offering a 20 per cent discount on the food bill."

Speaking to MidWest radio, he joked: “We might even offer a 30% discount if you bring your hot water bottle.”

He revealed the pub only has single-glaze windows and they have to use fan heaters which “burns the juice”.

The publican, who said the price of his electricity and gas has tripled since 2019, revealed he will see how the promotion goes and doesn’t yet have an end date in mind.

He also told how they’re doing all the basics to keep energy costs low in addition to the new promotion.

Announcing the promotion on Facebook, Doyle's Corner said: “So now there is a chill in the air with a bag of coal gone from €16 a bag to €33, we thought now might be a good time to launch our new Tuesday promo.

“Bring yer coat and get 20% off your food bill.”

In August, the owner of a small cafe in Westmeath was left shocked after she received an electrical bill for nearly €10,000.

Geraldine Dolan, who has been running Poppy Fields Cafe in Athlone for the last 16 years, received an eye-watering bill for €9,836 for usage between July 8 and August 19.
