Dublin man refused bail after garda dragged 70ft by car

A man was last night charged with dangerous driving after a garda was seriously injured when he was dragged 70ft by a car.

George Richard Asim ionesei, 22, was brought before a special court sitting in connection with the incident in Straffan, Co Kildare, just before midnight on Friday. Sgt Philip Taylor told Naas District Court officers “will be seeking further charges in relation to endangerment and dangerous driving causing serious harm”.

Dressed in a white T-shirt and black tracksuit bottoms Asim ionesei stood for the half-hour hearing which took place just after 8pm. Sgt Philip Taylor from Leixlip Gardva station gave evidence that it is alleged a BMW was reported by members of the public as driving erratically through Straffan, Co Kildare, just before midnight on Friday.

A Garda stopped the vehicle near the Barberstown Roundabout and it’s alleged the driver had no identification. The court heard the investigating Garda tried to prevent the vehicle from moving again, by attempting to press the start stop button.

He claimed the driver then took off and the Garda was dragged around 60 or 70 feet. He was rushed to Naas General hospital suffering with head injuries. The car later collided with a wall and traffic lights before the two occupants made off.

Sargent Taylor told the court it was around 10 hours later when Mr Asim ionesei was arrested.

He said Asim ionesei, from Barrack Court in Rathcoole, Dublin, was charged with two counts of dangerous driving, one with no licence and one with no insurance. Sergeant Taylor said gardaí “will be seeking further charges in relation to endangerment and dangerous driving causing serious harm”.

The court heard the accused replied “I’m sorry garda” after each charge was put to him.

Sargent Taylor objected to bail, stating he believed the accused was a flight risk.

Judge Walsh refused bail and the accused was remanded in custody to appear back before the court on Thursday.
