Dublin jobs: Dublin Fire Brigade hiring for emergency services controllers to join their team

Dublin Fire Brigade is recruiting for full-time emergency services controllers to join their team.

The jobs notice was published on Dublin City Council's website, and the successful candidates will be working at the East Region Communication Centre with Dublin Fire Brigade. The East Region Communications Centre (ERCC) is currently located in Townsend Street, Dublin 2, and it handles the fire, rescue and emergency calls for all of Leinster, Cavan and Monaghan and also handles Emergency Ambulance calls for Dublin city and county.

In the jobs description, the emergency services controllers will receive emergency calls from the public and other agencies. The emergency services controller is responsible for identifying the location and nature of the incident in a timely, accurate, professional and courteous manner.

Successful candidates will be employed on a shift system which covers an emergency call answering service 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. The controller will be required to work a 9 hour and 15 hour shift system averaging a 39-hour week.

The fortnightly salary scale for the position of Emergency Services Controller, Dublin Fire Brigade, Dublin City Council ranges from €1,134.06 to €1,467.80. In addition to the basic wage, payments are made in respect of night and weekend duties, Sunday and Public Holiday premiums as applicable.

Emergency services controllers are also required to take part in a ten-week training course. After induction training, there will be on-going mentoring and training.

As part of their duties, they may take calls to other types of emergencies, which can involve both major and minor incidents including Water Rescue, High Line Rescue, Road Traffic Collisions, Flooding, Chemical Incidents and Marine Emergency Response.

Emergency service controllers may at times have to give life-saving advice to callers over the phone, and it's hugely important that all calls received in ERCC are processed in a professional manner and to the required accredited standards. This type of work requires a range of personal skills such as; understanding, reliability, flexibility, empath, compassion and the ability to work within a team

Qualifications/Skills needed

(A) Each candidate must have obtained at least Grade D (or a pass) in five subjects, including Mathematics and English, from the approved list of subjects in the Department of Education Leaving Certificate Examination or in an examination of at least equivalent standard

or (B)hold a Level 5 Certificate (Major award) on the National Framework of Qualifications (NFQ)

or (C) hold a recognized qualification (at least level 5 or greater), deemed comparable to the abovein terms of both le

Candidates must be at least 18 years of age on or before the closing date, March 3 2023, for the submission of application forms. They must be of good character, and also be in good health as determined by the City Council's Medical Advisor.

Successful candidates will be required to hold a current full unendorsed Driving Licence – Category B licence B manual prior to commencement of training.

Essential criteria

  • have good up to date knowledge of the services provided by Dublin Fire Brigade and Fire Services in Ireland
  • possess excellent communication and interpersonal skills both verbal and written
  • excellent organisation skills
  • be IT proficient
  • ability to function effectively as part of a team
  • be capable of taking instruction and work to policy, procedures and standard operating guidelines
  • have an ability to collate and interpret information from a range of sources;

Following four years satisfactory service as an Emergency Services Controller, eligible candidates may progress to the role of operational Fire Fighter/Paramedic.
