Dublin homelessness figures reach record high for seventh consecutive month

Homelessness figures in Dublin have risen for the seventh month in a row.

The Department of Housing published the grim statistics today, which showed that 5,946 adults were registered as homeless in Dublin last month. The figures are based on the number of people relying on emergency accommodation across January.

The Simon Communities of Ireland expressed concern at the findings. They also called on the government to extend the moratorium on evictions to address the escalating homelessness crisis in Ireland.

Sinn Fein's housing spokesperson Eoin O Broin said: "Single person homelessness is up as is family homelessness, although with a small decrease in the number of children in Department of Housing-funded emergency accommodation. Of course these figures do not record all adults and children in emergency accommodation funded by the state or not in receipt of any state funding. "

He continued: "When all of these people are included the true figure is closer to 18,000 people."

Mr O Broin said that the findings were particularly worrying due to the emergency ban currently in place on evictions. The total number of people recorded as homeless nationwide stands at 11,754.
