Dublin getting cleaner with no litter blackspots in the capital

No areas of Dublin are considered a litter blackspot on the Irish Business Against Litter's 2022 survey.

Their October 2021 survey found that Dublin's north inner city was "seriously littered" - but it has improved its rank to "littered" this year, the area's best result in years.

Dublin city centre is also in the "littered" category, while Ballymun and Tallaght are "moderately littered".

Crumlin and Dublin Airport were the top performers of the Dublin areas, making the "clean to European norms" rank.

Drogheda and Ballybane in Galway's inner city are the worst places in Ireland for litter at the moment.

The survey ranked 40 towns and cities around the country and found that overall PPE litter decreased compared to last year.

However, coffee cup litter has remained a problem and was found in 25% of the sites surveyed.

IBAL spokesman Conor Horgan said that the new results show Ireland is getting cleaner after Covid.

“With cleaning schedules back to normal, less PPE litter and less alcohol consumption outdoors, litter levels have fallen," he said.

"However, despite improvements, the centres of our main cities are still littered at a time when we are welcoming our peak tourist numbers. For a high-cost destination, higher standards are required."
