Dublin GAA legend Jonny Cooper retires with emotional statement

Legendary Dublin GAA player Jonny Cooper has retired as he issued an emotional statement on social media.

The corner back who has seven all-Ireland medals and ten Leinster titles under his belt said the time was right for him to step away from the game. The 33-yearo-old suffered a foot injury in 2019 which made it difficult for him to return to the top of his game.

He wrote on social media: "Going to Hill 16 from hip height with my mother had me completely hooked. I have had the immense honour and pleasure to play on the Dublin Senior Football Team for 11 years.

"The time is now right for me to move on to the next chapter and say thank you to so many.

"To my friends who have backed me no matter what - although I missed a few occasions along the way I always had the aim to make you proud. Whatever I possess is simply gleaned from you."

He also thanked the fans, saying: "To the loyal and passionate Dublin supporters. Many times electricity ran through my veins - I have never felt more alive than in front of you.

"I appreciate this deep connection; your support on the good days and not so good days is unrivalled." Jonny also thanked his partner Saoirse "who's relentless love, work ethic, support and encouragement" allowed Jonny to chase his dream.

Fans thanked Jonny for his commitment to the game they love. One wrote: "Absolute legend.

"Thanks for all the memories… memories with my dad on Hill 16. Special moments created by you and the incredible squads you were a part of over the years."

Another said: "Wonderful player! An inspiration to our family! Well done!"

A third said: "Mighty man Jonny, what a pleasure for me to have known a man like. True leader, on and off the field. And to Saoirse too, what a lady. Enjoy time off the field now both of ye."
