Dublin comedy panel have honest discussions on sex, identity and ecofeminism

A monthly comedy show taking place in Dublin is set to discuss topics on intersectional feminism with a panel of experts, activists and personalities.

Bla Bla Bla is a mix of stand-up, audience interaction and a Q&A will be used to discuss big topics around intersectional feminism.

One of Ireland’s funniest and most unique voices comedian Blaithin de Burca is hosting the monthly show in Sin E each month.

She told Dublin Live: “In 2019 before the world started to melt, that’s the first time I ran this show. We basically did five nights in a row and discussed various different topics.

“The idea is that it’s a light comedy panel show about intersectional feminism. I know it doesn’t sound funny but we make it funny.

“The whole idea came about from the concept of being at a house party where you’d end up sitting with your best friends and having deep meaningful chats at 7:00am, pouring yourself another glass of wine, you be talking absolute sh*te - you’d be having a conversation about things that are really important.

“It’s that kind of vibes where you’re having a chat in my living room and being with your mates.”

Blaithin believes the time is right for her special brand of feminist fun where everyone can learn and laugh together.

She said: “My friends are mostly women, LGBT people and the occasional cis man if I decide to invite him in. The idea is to have that kind of energy but to bring in people who actually know what they’re talking about.

“Hopefully we can make a change and learn together rather than it being wasted on these DMCs that never see the light of day ever again.

“We’ve had chats about identity, sex and sexuality, activism and being an ally. This time we’re doing a monthly show and we’re being more specific. We did a show on women in Irish history. This month we’re talking about ecofeminism - cosmetics.

“We can focus on ecofeminism and fashion, ecofeminism and plastic and so on.”

Blaithin is excited to have the opportunity to give a platform to people from a wide range of backgrounds doing important things in Ireland and abroad and shed some light on feminism in the modern context to bring more diversity, inclusion and openness to our audience.

“Intersectional feminism is about everybody. It covers so much,” she added.

“We can make it about anything. We want to bring something different each month and not be making the same point every month.

“Everyone is welcome to the show as long as you’ve an open mind. The whole idea of the show is tipsy, chatting at the aftersesh vibe where you do find your disagreements when it comes to intersectional feminism.

“It covers everybody and recognising that one group might need more attention than others - for example black women are more likely to die during childbirth than white women - why is that? Another one is the gender pay gap.

“There’s different causes in feminism that need attention. It’s very inclusive and it can be a big scary concept and that’s why I'm there with a panel of experts. I ask the questions that everyone wants to know. It’s to bring people together, learn and be entertained.”

The show takes host Blaithin's usual style of stand-up, opening up a forum for people to have a light-hearted, inclusive back and forth - utilising a combination of wit, expertise, opinion, personal experience and pure whimsy to create and encourage honest and productive discussion.

Bla Bla Bla… With Special Guests will be on May 29, 2022 and they will cover the topic of Ecofeminism - Cosmetics.
