Dublin City Council announces extra cleaning resources for city in effort to tackle dirty streets

Dublin City Council has announced extra cleaning resources for the city centre have been allocated to clean dirty streets.

It comes fresh off complaints of Dublin's lack of cleanliness on its most popular streets. Issues that have arisen include piles of discarded cans, bottles, coffee cups and pizza boxes along the Grand Canal, grimy grease-stained streets and urine soaked alleyways in the media and from politicians.

Now Dublin City Council has moved to confirm they are tackling the issue. They have said that the influx of tourists into the capital presents "challenges" during the Summer months.

They are also urging businesses and residents to "do their part" to keep outside their building clean. A third party contractor has also been hired to assist with cleaning services.

The council said: "Dublin City Council would like to confirm that it has allocated extra resources to help clean streets and collect litter in areas of high footfall in the city-centre commercial district. There are 11 street washing vehicles in operation in the city on a weekly basis and the City Council intends to add a further 3 vehicles and wash crews over the coming weeks. Additional staff will also be rostered in the coming days.

"Dublin City Council will continue to monitor the effectiveness of its waste management service and will assign extra resources to target specific areas. The City Council very much welcomes the summer influx of tourists to the city, as well as the recent fine weather and the increase in outdoor dining. However, this does present some challenges."
