Dublin Castle named among most popular royal palaces in the world

Dublin Castle has been named among the most popular royal palaces in the world.

To celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, the colour palettes of the world’s most popular royal palaces have been revealed in a new set of images and Dublin Castle ranks in the top ten.

Dublin Castle ranked number 10 on the list while Buckingham Palace in London is number 1. Windsor Palace and Kensington Palace are in second and third place while other popular palaces around the world to make the list include Palace of Versailles in France, Mysore Palace in India, The Forbidden City in Beijing, China and Prague Castle in the Czech Republic.

Dublin Castle was the seat of English, and later British rule in Ireland from 1204 until 1922. During that period, it served principally as a residence for the British monarch’s Irish representative, the Viceroy of Ireland, and as a ceremonial and administrative centre.

The castle was originally constructed as a medieval fortress under the orders of King John of England and had four corner towers linked by high curtain walls.

Once occupied by an earlier Viking settlement, there was an old castle that stood approximately on the site of the present Upper Castle Yard.

The last ever Viceroy of Ireland handed Dublin Castle over to Michael Collins and the government of the newly-independent Irish state on January 16, 1922.

The study by building design specialist Roofing Megastore identified 10 key colours and shades from the interiors of the top ten most popular royal palaces in the world to create the royal colour palette series.

Researchers analysed search data on Google and hashtag data on Instagram to create an overall popularity score.

"Here we see a palette of emerald greens and regal reds complimented by dark orangey gold in the frames of the paintings on the wall," the study said of Dublin Castle.

"Alongside the pale colours from the ivory walls and marble pillars, the room’s dominate colour is green – with a light sage tone on the ceiling and a bright and bold carpet with multiple shades of green on the floor."
