Dublin Airport's new north runway opens for first flight and how to watch it live

Dublin Airport will open its new north runway to flights today.

The runway, located over 1.6km north from the current runway, is set to have its first flight either later this morning or shortly after midday between 11.30am and 12.30pm. It brings a project which began over 15 years ago to life.

The flight on the north runway will be part of the schedule and will be the only flight to use the new airstrip today. It will be live streamed on the Dublin Airport YouTube channel.

Starting tomorrow, August 25, the runway will operate between the hours of 9am and 1pm. Once it becomes a part of normal operations that will then increase from 7am to 1pm.

Following that operation will increase once again from 7am to 6pm and a constant review will take place. The €320 million runway is 3.1km long and was first granted permission for construction in 2007. Work on its construction didn't begin until 2016 when the first sod was turned.

Residents living close to Dublin Airport are set to receive a grant of €20,000 to insulate their homes from nighttime air traffic noise. The move could cost the Dublin Airport Authority a potential bill of €6m to insulate up to 300 homes in the vicinity. It comes after Fingal County Council made it a condition of easing restrictions on the airport’s new runway.

Ahead of the opening of the new runway, the daa was seeking amendments to the runway's 2007 planning permission that will allow the 3.1km runway to be used between 6am and midnight and that a noise quota system would be used to dictate the number of night-time flights at the airport. The 2007 planning permission already in place curtails flights between 11pm and 7am.
