Dublin Airport: Over 3,000 unclaimed bags moved from Terminal 1 to warehouse

All 3,000 unclaimed bags at Dublin Airport have been moved from Terminal One to a warehouse.

Aviation Minister Hildegarde Naughton said a transfer of all bags from the T1 Baggage Hall to a landside location, believed to be in the Swords area, was now complete. The place where the “missing” bags are being kept is convenient for passengers, with sufficient parking and access.

The junior minister said: “It is expected that this will speed up this baggage repatriation process as both handlers and couriers will not require badged access to this area.” Ms Naughton confirmed that air carriers are liable for damage caused by delay in the carriage by air of passengers’ baggage or cargo.

A passenger’s rights are clear that where baggage is not returned within 21 days of the flight, the airline concerned should treat it as lost and settle claims on that basis. The airline liability for baggage delay is limited to 1,000 Special Drawing Down rights which are linked to an exchange rate which is currently around €1,300.

The minister said: “Airlines have different policies in respect to reimbursing passengers while they await their baggage. Some offer a small payment, others would expect passengers to make a claim with evidence of expenses incurred.

“Where a passenger has already engaged with the airline or is not satisfied with compensation received, if any, they may seek resolution through the Small Claims Court.”

She also made it clear that while Dublin Airport provides the baggage system infrastructure in the terminals, it is not responsible for the handling of baggage which is looked after by the airline and their handling partners.
