Dublin Airport: One major flying rule could be scrapped, says expert

The rule banning liquids in containers larger than 100ml looks set to be scrapped in multiple airports according to one travel expert.

The 100ml rule was first introduced back in 2006 but it could be no more according to travel expert Eoghan Corry who was speaking to Newstalk.

Shannon Airport is set to be the first major airport to ditch the rule after it introduced a new passenger screening system.

The new system means passengers will be able to carry liquids onto a plane in containers larger than 100ml as long as the liquid is in their carry-on luggage.

But why was the 100ml rule initially introduced back in 2006?

A terror alert from Britain in August 2005 led to the EU introducing the 100ml rule across the bloc.

British police thankfully foiled the terrorist plot in which they had planned to smuggle explosives onto aircraft. It was the largest ever terrorist plot discovered by British police.

Improvised explosive devices were concealed in soft drink bottles with the end goal being to destroy up to 10 transatlantic planes causing thousands of deaths.

Why can airports now drop this rule?

New technology has meant that airports such as Shannon and Donegal no longer have to enforce the 100ml rule.

"The rules haven't changed, what has changed is the technology... four or five companies have been upping the level of technology all the time."

"And what they're all aspiring to is a situation where we don't have to take laptops and liquids out of bags - that they're scanned in 3D."

"Shannon have introduced it - they introduced it before Christmas - Donegal Airport have also introduced it," Eoghan Corry told Newstalk Breakfast.

However for passengers to really feel the benefit, more airports will have to drop the 100ml rule.

Currently if a passenger flies from Shannon to Heathrow, the 100ml rule will still be in force when going through Heathrow.

"An individual airport upgrading its technology is great, but if you're flying from Shannon and you transfer through another airport like Heathrow the rules still apply," Corry said.
