Dublin Airport hand baggage rules explained: What am I allowed to bring through security?

Summer is closing in fast and soon Irish holidaymakers will be jetting off for a well-deserved break away.

If you're travelling through Dublin Airport this summer, it's important to check what size hand baggage and what items you're allowed to bring on board, to avoid a fine or having any of your items confiscated.

While each airline will have varying hand baggage policies, there are set rules on what is and isn't allowed go through security screening at Dublin Airport.

Here are the different hand baggage rules in place Ryanair, Aer Lingus and security screening at Dublin Airport.

Rules at Dublin Airport security screening

Each passenger is permitted to carry one single transparent 1l liquid bag. The bag must be sealed shut and all containers inside must be 100ml or less.

At security screening, liquids must be presented separate to your hand luggage. There are free plastic bags available before you go through security.

Some passengers will be allowed liquids of plus 100ml, such as baby milk, medicine or special dietary liquids. If this applies to you, you must ask a Security Officer for an allowed liquids tray.

Dublin Airport advised that there ideally should be no sharp objects in hand baggage. However, small items of less than 6cm in size are allowed eg, a small nail scissors.

Stunning devices and incapacitating devices, projectile-firing weapons and tools including crowbars, drills and saws are prohibited from your hand luggage.

All passenger fare types include a small personal bag (40x20x25cm), which must fit under the seat in front of you. Passengers who purchase Ryanair's Priority and 2 Cabin bags option can bring a 10kg wheelie bag (55x40x20cm) on board, as well as their small personal bag.

For those travelling with a baby, Ryanair offer extra items. You can carry 2 items of baby equipment free of charge per child.

There is no cabin bag allowance for an infant (aged 8 days to 23 months). However, they allow a baby bag up to 5kg (dimensions: 45x35x20cms) for babies travelling on an adult's lap.

Over-sized cabin baggage will be refused at the boarding gate, or where available, placed in the hold of the aircraft for a fee of €/£ 69.99 (fee subject to VAT on domestic flights at applicable government rates).

Alternatively, you can drop your bag off at the check-in desk or bag drop kiosk (available in Dublin, Shannon and London) when check-in opens and collect it again at the bag carousel when you land. This option is free.
