Dublin Airport described as 'shambles' and 'a joke' after two hour long security queues at weekend

Passengers at Dublin Airport on Sunday have described the queues as "chaotic" and the "worst in Europe" after many faced two hour waits in line.

There were lengthy delays in both Terminals during the evening time and some flights were delayed as a result of the "shambles".

One passenger told Dublin Live that it took him over two hours to get through security yesterday despite the notice board saying it was a 40 minute wait time.

He described the experience as "chaotic" and said "at one point it looked like it was going to boil over."

"People skipping the queues which you normally wouldn’t mind but everyone was in the same boat being late, so just made things worse and added to the frustration and anger," he said.

"People, while extremely patient for the most part, were very angry because of this.

"Most of the tourists and non Irish residents were bewildered and enraged by the chaotic scenes at an international airport and let’s face it they were right."

Others took to social media to slam the scenes at the airport yesterday evening.

One said: "There was a 1 hour and 40 minute queue through security yesterday. Absolutely horrific."

Another wrote: "Took 1.5hrs to get through security and loads of flights including my own have been delayed. Dublin Airport have been an absolute shambles today."

A third said: "a total disgrace how you manage the airport. Probably the worst I ever been in Europe. More than two hours to go through security. And one staff member said is because everyone is travelling after COVID. You need to do something now! This is a joke."

Another passenger pointed out that there was "one security person scanning boarding passes."

They said: "Tonight your airport is a disaster. Shameful wait of 2 hours to clear security. This isn’t how you run an airport."

A Dublin Airport spokesman told Dublin Live: "The time it is taking to get through security at Dublin Airport stabilised considerably during April and this has continued through the first half of May.

"Last weekend was another busy one for Dublin Airport, but things moved well throughout. In recent weeks, more than 90% of passengers have got through security in less than 30 minutes, with 98% getting through in less than 45 minutes.

"However, while the potential remains for times longer than this, particularly at busy times, we continue to advise passengers to arrive up to two and a half hours before a short-haul flight and three and a half hours before a long-haul flight."
