Dublin Airport: daa seeks to build solar farm to 'generate electricity'

Plans to build a photovoltaic solar farm on a site south-west of Dublin Airport's airfield have been lodged by daa.

The solar farm will generate electricity for the airport and plans were submitted to Fingal County Council on February 4.

Third parties can make submissions on the plan to the Council until March 10.

The proposed site is located in the townland of Shanganhill, close to Dublin Airport Logistics Park.

The development will consist of the installation of a ground mounted solar photovoltaic (PV) array with associated development and ancillary works including inverters, modules and transformers, site cabling and two substation buildings.

There will be a storage container on a concrete base, an internal access road and attendant surface water drainage, as well as the formation of a new site entrance onto South Parallel Road (R108).

They also plan to build security boundary fencing and landscaping and a security controlled entry gate and lighting.

A spokesman for daa told Dublin Live that the development would supply 8.1% of Dublin Airport's overall energy requirements.

He said: "This project proposes a Solar PV Farm to generate electricity at Dublin Airport. If permitted, the installation will support daa’s sustainability goals as well as compliance with regulatory energy and carbon emissions targets.

"It would supply 8.1% of Dublin Airport’s overall energy requirements and 11.7% of its electrical requirements.

"daa has committed to 10% of Dublin Airport’s electricity being produced on-site through renewable generation by 2030.

"This is one fundamental step on the path to Net Zero emissions by 2050 for daa and the further use of renewable energy will be an essential part of this."
