Dublin Airport and gardai to order drone owners to not fly within 5km of airspace

Drone owners will be ordered not to fly their machines within 5km of an airport.

The move by gardai, Dublin Airport Authority and the Irish Aviation Authority follows recent drone activity that results in significant disruption at Ireland’s largest airport. Leaflets will be distributed to homes as well as commercial premises near the hubs to alert enthusiasts.

DAA chief Kenny Jacobs said there is now a hi-tech “drone detection system in place at Dublin Airport”. Assistant Garda Commissioner Angela Willis said: “Crime prevention always includes the cooperation of the public. Any sightings of unauthorised drones around Dublin Airport should be reported to us.”

Irish Aviation Authority chief Peter Kearney said: “Unauthorised operation of a drone is reckless and dangerous and potentially puts lives at risk.”
