Colin Farrell said he “couldn’t be more excited” as it was confirmed he will star as The Penguin in a new spin-off show.
The limited series, which follows the box office success of Matt Reeves’ The Batman, has officially received the green light from streaming service HBO Max.
Dubliner Farrell will reprise his role as underworld kingpin Oswald Cobblepot.
In a statement he said: “The world that Matt Reeves created for The Batman is one that warrants a deeper gaze through the eyes of Oswald Cobblepot.
“I couldn’t be more excited about continuing this exploration of Oz as he rises through the darkened ranks to become The Penguin.
“Will be good to get him back on the streets of Gotham for a little madness and a little mayhem.”
Farrell, 45, has received huge praise for his performance in the new flick,
alongside Robert Pattinson in the lead role, and will serve as one of the executive producers on the latest series.
The Batman writer-director Reeves, who will also be an executive producer, said: “Colin exploded off the screen as The Penguin in The Batman and having the chance to thoroughly explore the inner life of that character on HBO Max is an absolute thrill.”
The series will also be executive produced by Dylan Clark, Daniel Pipski, Adam Kassan and Lauren LeFranc, who will serve as showrunner.
LeFranc said: “I have long been a fan of the world of The Batman and Matt’s film is such a powerful and bold entry into the canon.
“I am excited and humbled to continue telling stories in the grimy world of Gotham City – and what better excuse to channel my inner villain than to tell the story of Oswald Cobblepot?”
The series, which has the working title of The Penguin, will pick up the story where The Batman leaves off on the
big screen.
The Batman has dominated the box office worldwide, collecting €16.3million across Ireland and the UK in its opening weekend after its release on March 4.
According to Warner Bros the film, which also stars Irish actor Barry Keoghan, was released in 709 locations – a record for the production company.
It topped the 677 of 2018’s Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes Of Grindelwald and the 671 locations of 2019’s Joker.
