At least six people were injured, two of them critically, after a speeding low-floor Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) bus ploughed through five vehicles on a crowded road in west Delhi’s Mayapuri on Saturday night. Police said that the bus driver claimed that he lost control over the vehicle after the brakes of the vehicle malfunctioned. Police have arrested the driver.

The incident took place around 9pm when a DTC low-floor air-conditioned bus suddenly lost control and hit two motorcycles and one scooter on Mayapuri main road. Police said at least six people who were inside the vehicles or were passing by were injured.

“Four of the injured required hospitalisation. They were rushed to Deen Dayal Upadhyay hospital. We are gathering details about them to inform their families. A case is being registered under relevant sections,” said deputy commissioner of police (west) Deepak Purohit.

The DCP said that they have identified the bus driver as 42-year-old Anil Singh. “He has been arrested,” Purohit said.

A police officer probing the accident said that they are yet to question witnesses or record their statements. The bus was plying on a route from Delhi Cantt to Uttam Nagar. “We are not sure if the brakes malfunctioned. The vehicle has been seized for mechanical inspection,” the officer said.

Police said that some angered locals later tried vandalizing the bus, triggering heavy traffic jams on the road. “Additional traffic police was deployed to clear the snarls and we managed to disperse the crowd that tried to vandalise the bus,” the officer said.
