DT Davon Godchaux calls out ‘selfish’ plays on Patriots defense

New England Patriots defensive tackle Davon Godchaux has never been one to shy away from his feelings on a particular subject. So it was no surprise that he was so blunt when breaking down the recent defensive problems for the team.

When appearing on WEEI’s “Jones & Keefe,” the veteran defender chalked the issues up to selfishness on the football field. He wants to see the Patriots’ defensive unit play more as a team moving forward.

“I’ll be honest, we got guys being kind of selfish,” said Godchaux. “We’re down, guys want to make plays, I get it. I’m talking about defense. Everybody has to play as 11, and everybody has to sacrifice to do what’s best for the team. I know some guys want to make plays when we’re down trying to get back in the game, but we’ve got to keep going as a team and play team defense.”

Coming into the season, the Patriots were believed to wield a top-10 defensive unit. However, in recent weeks, they struggled in the three losses to the Seattle Seahawks, New York Jets and San Francisco 49ers.

It’s important to keep in mind that the unit has been bitten by the injury bug. Defensive tackle Christian Barmore is out indefinitely after being diagnosed with blood clots, and linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley is sidelined for the rest of the season with a torn pec.

Safety Kyle Dugger also left Sunday’s game against the 49ers with an injury.

With that said, injuries happen every season, and the Patriots must make the necessary adjustments to remain competitive.
