DSPCA seeks new volunteers - with own transport not essential

The DSPCA is hosting an information panel as it seeks new education volunteers for the charity.

The animal charity is inviting people to attend a free information panel this Thursday as more school-based events take place post pandemic. Volunteers can join the education outreach team, which organises talks and DSPCA tours.

DSPCA spokesperson Gillian Bird is encouraging people with a love of animals to consider signing up. She said that people shouldn't be deterred from applying if they don't drive, as the group also organises virtual events that require much needed assistance.

Gillian said: "Things slowed down due to Covid and we need to take on more volunteers now. The main thing is that volunteers have some personal experience helping animals as it really helps those who are teaching kids at events."

People who sign up can spend time at the DPSCA's rescue to learn more about helping our furry friends. Gillian said that it has proved challenging to recruit volunteers in recent times as schedules often clash.

She added: "People love to come along and do it but the problem is that most sessions take place during the working week. It's a catch 22 because I don't have volunteers to help me and therefore can't organise talks."

Anyone with a genuine interest in animals and an ability to engage with children is encouraged to attend. The information session is free of charge and takes place at the DSPCA's base in Rathfarnham.

The session will begin at 11am and willlast for a maximum of two hours. People can expect a short tour around the shelter as part of the session and can register their interest via Eventbrite.
