Drunken Seaham man got in 'terrible state' before threatening pregnant partner with knife

A drunken man got in a "terrible state" before threatening his pregnant partner with a knife.

Kai Taylor had drank around seven pints after visiting a number of pubs on May 21 this year before he became "extremely aggressive" and pointed a knife at the belly of his pregnant partner. The 22-year-old also pointed a knife in the back of another woman on the same date who came to assist, before he was arrested.

Taylor appeared at Durham Crown Court via link from HMP Durham on Monday to be sentenced for affray, assault and possession of a blade. He pleaded guilty to the charges during the hearing.

Judge James Adkin, the Recorder of Durham, said Taylor had been drinking at a number of pubs with family members and "got in a terrible state". He said Taylor then went to his mother's home, shouting he was "going back to jail" before he "stabbed himself". The judge said: "You then threatened your pregnant partner with a knife and pointed the knife at her stomach. You then left, and were trying to stab car tyres. You were extremely aggressive to police and were completely out of control."

The court heard that Taylor, who was on licence at the time for burglary, also pointed a knife in the back of another woman on the same day. Matthew Hopkins, prosecuting, said Taylor had 16 previous convictions for 35 offences, including a previous conviction for battery. He added that the defendant's former pregnant partner "feared for her life" during the incident.

Ian West, defending, asked for credit for Taylor's guilty pleas and said the offences were as a result of "drunken stupidity on this day". He said he may have "seriously jeopardised his relationship with his unborn child. Mr West added: "It's highly likely social services will step in and either prohibit him from seeing the child. For his stupidity, he has potentially paid a high price."

Judge Adkin sentenced Taylor, of Clara Street, Seaham, to 21 months in prison.
