Drunk Paisley man flipped his car after crashing into plastic bollard

A Paisley man who flipped his car after crashing into a plastic bollard was more than three times the legal drink drive limit.

Sozzled Victor Gilchrist, 58, lost control of his Peugeot 208 and collided with a plastic bollard causing the vehicle to flip on October 30, last year.

Gilchrist was able to clamber out of the vehicle in Paisley’s Cardell Road, in front of shocked members of the public who contacted the cops.

Paisley Sheriff Court heard cops took self-employed Gilchrist to hospital where his urine was tested for alcohol.

Analysis showed the proportion of alcohol in his system was 219mg in 100ml of urine.

The limit being 67mg.

Procurator fiscal depute Tracy Yuill told the court: “Around 10pm, the accused was driving on Cardell Road when an unknown vehicle was driving towards him.

“At this point the accused lost control and hit a plastic bollard causing the vehicle to flip.

“Gilchrist got out of the vehicle and members of the public who he spoke to contacted the police.”

Court heard officers attended and checked Gilchrist’s welfare and he refused medical treatment.

Ms Yuill added: “Gilchrist identified himself as the driver and stated he had a few pints earlier that night with the last one being at 5pm.

“A roadside breath test was carried out which Gilchrist failed.

“He was arrested and at Govan police station he was assessed by medical staff due to the car’s airbag being deployed and he was taken to hospital.

“A urine sample was taken which was examined showing the sample had no less than 219ml of alcohol.”

Gilchrist, of Lochaline Avenue in the town chose to represent himself at court and explained he understood a driving ban would be inevitable in this case.

Sheriff Suhkwinder Gill said: “I will take into account that you have no previous convictions and have a clean driving license.

“But given the charge I need to disqualify you from driving and the minimum ban here is 12months, but given the high reading in this case, I will disqualify you for two years, but given the timing of your plea, I can reduce this to 16months.”

Sheriff Gill banned Gilchrist from holding or obtaining a driving licence for 16 months and made him suitable for the drink-drive rehabilitation programme which if successfully completed will reduce his ban by four months.

In addition, Gilchrist was fined £680 and ordered to pay this at the rate of £20 per week.
