'Drunk on Bruno' - National media react to Newcastle United’s comeback win vs Leicester

There was plenty of praise for Bruno Guimaraes from the national media after his heroics against Leicester. The Brazilian has been slowly introduced to English football by Eddie Howe and Newcastle United are now reaping the rewards for their patience.

Unsurprisingly, his two goals to stun the Foxes and move the Magpies 12 points clear of the relegation zone grabbed all the headlines on a sunny Easter Sunday afternoon at St James’ Park.

This is how outlets across the country reacted to the 2-1 win.

‘Drunk on Bruno’ - Daily Mail

Craig Hope in the Daily Mail described how even the teetotallers were ‘drunk on Bruno’ after his match-winning display. He wrote: “In the Gallowgate End behind the goal into which his diving header had so sweetly nestled, grown men mimicked their new hero and dispensed with their black-and-white jerseys. Sadly, their ale-laden guts were visible. But even the teetotallers were drunk on Bruno.”

Bigg Market afterparty - The Sun

Oscar Paul in the Sun believes Guimaraes is already on his way to becoming a cult hero on Tyneside. “The Brazilian midfielder was already on his way to hero status on Tyneside after a stunning start to life in Newcastle following his January switch from Lyon,” he wrote.

“But his first two goals at St James’ Park, with the second virtually the last kick of the game, had the Toon Army absolutely bouncing towards the Bigg Market for an Easter Sunday afterparty.”

‘Guimaraes is immensely gifted’ - The Guardian

The Guardian also fawned over Guimaraes following the victory. Louise Taylor wrote: “It was Guimarães’ second goal of a game in which he shone both in and, perhaps more importantly, out of possession.

“Guimarães is also immensely gifted and highly intelligent. These two qualities would prove decisive as Howe’s side won a fifth successive home game – lifting them to 37 points, 12 clear of the relegation places – on an afternoon when they were often outpassed and outthought by a frequently impressive and extremely slick Leicester.”

More Bruno love-in

Yesterday’s win means Newcastle can start to look up the table rather than fear relegation, claims Nick Wright. In his match report for Sky Sports, he wrote: “The Magpies are not mathematically safe yet, but the two-goal heroics of their £40m January signing from Lyon - whose performance was described as "magnificent" by Eddie Howe - means they are able to start looking ahead to another season of top-flight football and perhaps a brighter future too.
