Drunk Monkseaton yob avoids jail after biting Metro worker and assaulting others in rush hour

A drunk yob sank his teeth into a Metro worker and assaulted two others after being asked to produce a ticket.

Disgraceful John Moon turned aggressive onboard a train and on a platform in front of shocked commuters during an evening rush hour.

A court heard that the 32-year-old was spitting and had to be detained by three Nexus employees while the police were called but refused to calm down.

Instead, he bit one worker and shoved the other two during a shocking outburst of violence.

Magistrates in North Tyneside were told that the victim of the bite was left with a puncture wound to his hand.

Moon, formerly of Jesmond but now of no fixed abode, was arrested and pleaded guilty to three counts of assault by beating and a public order offence.

Rebecca Gibson, prosecuting, said that one of the victims approached Moon at around 6.15pm on February 14 and asked to see his ticket.

He immediately became verbally aggressive, tried repeatedly to grab her body-worn camera and told her to "get the f**k away from me".

Mrs Gibson continued: "[The victim] explained to him that she had activated her body-worn camera. The defendant tried to grab it again.

"Her colleague then came from behind and asked the defendant to sit down. He screamed "get the f**k away from me". He then picked up a can, which was open, and threw the contents of it over the carriage.

"The colleague radioed for assistance and another staff member appeared. He pushed the defendant up against he carriage doors."

The court heard that the three workers detained Moon while the train pulled into West Monkseaton Metro Station but he continued to be abusive and tried to break free on the platform.

Mrs Gibson added: "The defendant then assaulted one of the staff members by biting him. The victim described that he bit his left hand and broke the skin.

"The defendant was also spitting. He doesn't spit at the victims but is spitting in general.

"The other two employees were pushed by the defendant."

The police were called and Moon was arrested but claimed he had little recollection of events.

In a statement, one victim said: "I strongly believe that, had we not managed to detain John Moon, me or my colleagues could have ended up on the tracks."

Liz Dunbar, defending, said Moon hadn't been in trouble since 2017 and had accepted his guilt at an early stage.

The solicitor added: "Mr Moon doesn't think he bit the worker. He thinks the injury is from his hand hitting his teeth but he can't dispute what's been said as he was under the influence."

Moon was given an 18-month community order, with 180 hours of unpaid work, and must pay a total of £300 compensation.
