A DRIVER who allegedly recorded a blood-alcohol reading more than five times the legal limit near the southern end of Lake Macquarie has been charged and his licence suspended.

Police were called to a residential area at Mannering Park about 7pm on Monday after a Nissan Navara crashed into several bins by the side of the road.

Officers who arrived at the scene found the driver - a 55-year-old man - trying to reverse the Nissan out of a culvert. He hit a parked vehicle as a result.

Police allegedly saw the man then throw his keys from the Nissan.

Officers allege the man appeared well-affected by alcohol and he failed a roadside breath test.

Breath analysis at Wyong Police Station returned a result of 0.271 - more than five times the legal limit.

The 55-year-old's licence was immediately suspended and he was charged with high range drink driving.
