Drunk charity worker jailed after he threatened to kill bus driver and assaulted police officers

A charity worker has been jailed after threatening to kill a bus driver before going on to assault police officers.

Disgraced Michael McCreadie had spent the day drinking on March 18, last year when he got on a bus where he went on to threaten the driver, challenge him to a fight and brandish a bottle of Buckfast at a group of youths.

In a desperate bid for help, the driver was able to flag down nearby cops in Linwood Road.

However, the drunk thug, 40, subjected the police officers to a tirade of abuse before assaulting two officers by kicking them.

Procurator fiscal depute, Emma Gilliland told Paisley Sheriff Court David Church was working as a bus driver and McCreadie got on the bus at Buchanan Bus Station in Glasgow and was heading to Greenock.

Ms Gilliland explained: “Around 9.30pm the bus driver observed the accused staggering and that he appeared intoxicated.

“He got on the bus and a short time later, a group of youths got on and sat next to the accused.

“McCreadie became aggressive towards the group which caused them to run towards the front of the bus.

“McCreadie then brandished a bottle of Buckfast at them.”

The court heard how the driver then stopped the bus and told sozzled McCreadie to get off.

Ms Gilliland added: “He stepped off the bus and said to Mr Church, ‘You’re a dead man, watch your back, I’ll get you next time.’

“The accused then challenged Mr Church to a fight. At 10.15pm, the driver was able to flag down police that were on duty and when they cautioned McCreadie, he replied, ‘F**k you, you’ll be in the morgue.’

“Two police officers took hold of the accused’s arms to place him in handcuffs but he tensed his arms and tried to pull away.

“Once handcuffed, he was placed in the back of a van where he intentionally kicked police officers while continuing to shout and swear shouting, ‘Fat b*****d’ and ‘If you sit next to me, I’ll stick the nut on you.’

“Other police officers were requested to assist.”

The court then heard how further officers were asked to attend to deal with out-of-control McCreadie but he still continued to act aggressively shouting and swearing.

Eventually, officers managed to apply fast-straps to McCreadie’s legs due to him continuing to kick out and once arrested, cautioned and charged, he replied: “Wee guys tried to square up to me, I stood up for myself and I’m getting the jail.”

Defence agent, Sam Anderson explained McCreadie has suffered “alcohol misuse” since he was just 13-years-old.

Ms Anderson added: “He was highly intoxicated after drinking copious amounts of alcohol.

“He had learned his aunt had been diagnosed with cancer and he was using alcohol as a coping mechanism.

“His view is the group of youths were laughing at him and videoing him and events spiralled.

“In sober hindsight, he is completely mortified and wished to apologise to all involved.”

Sheriff Suhkwinder Gill said: “You got tanked up on Buckfast, got on a bus, shouted at the driver, brandished a bottle at youths on the bus, threatened to kill the bus driver and when he gets out and flags down police, you subject them to a tirade of abuse and then go on to assault police officers by kicking them.

“You have well and truly surpassed your offending behaviour and the custody threshold.

“Public service workers have a right to go to their work and not be abused.

“There is no alternative to a custodial sentence here.”

Sheriff Gill jailed McCreadie, of Maryhill Road in Glasgow, for eight months, reduced from nine months to reflect the timing of his plea.
