Drumsagard U15s coach Mark Gray says an incredible team spirit led to a title-winning season.
The Cambuslang club won the Lanarkshire Football Development Association (LFDA) ‘A’ league with an eight-point lead over second-placed Blackburn United and two games to spare.
Drumsagard won 17, drew two and lost just one of their games, and are through to the League Cup final, where they will face Hamilton’s St Patrick’s Sports Academy at the John Cumming Stadium in Carluke on May 14.
Gray says a team that grew up together and also socialises off the park is a winning combination.
He said: “I’m delighted for the boys. They’re about 15 now and some of them will have probably been together for about 10 years, since they were five starting out.
“The core of the team started together. I think the pleasing thing is how much work they’ve put in, since coming back after Covid – they’ve done extra training.
“But one of the biggest things is that they socialise outwith the football themselves, they’ll organise games of football, go for lunch after games, and that has created a team spirit for them to really push on this year.
“It creates more of a unity for them, but they’ve also really welcomed the other boys that have come in along the way, and that has been a big part.
“It’s not been cliquey; they’ve made new friends along the way but they’ve had that core that has set the standard.”
Gray has been impressed with results, and hopes that continues until the end of the season.
He said: “So far we’ve only lost once in the league, and there are still two games to go.
“For these lads it’s about trying to keep the standard that they’ve set for themselves.”
