Giant-killing Drumchapel United bosses John Black and Adam Hopes watched their side dump FC Edinburgh in the Scottish Cup then roared: Bring on the Old Firm. The seventh-tier part-timers’ fairytale debut in the competition reached new levels as they downed Alan Maybury’s League One highfliers thanks to Alec Docherty’s second half goal.
Drum didn’t even have home advantage as the pitch at their Donald Dewar Centre ground is being relaid. But on a gluepot park at Maryhill Juniors the West Of Scotland League side sent the Citizen’s sliding out to march into the fourth round.. And Black - who doubles as chairman and co-manager - is in now doubt he wants either Celtic or Rangers in Monday night’s draw.
He beamed: “Give us them up here and we’ll do them! No, to be honest, we are just a wee bit excited to be saying things like that. For us to get into fourth round is just amazing. It is a massive thing for the whole of the club. We have 41 football teams here from two-years-of-age to our over-70s. The majority of them were here from the walking football, so it is a great advert for the game.”
Drum were Scottish Amateur Cup champions 15 years ago but made the leap into the senior ranks in 2020.
Hopes said: “We know we’re not going to win the Scottish Cup so for me the dream draw for us would need to be Rangers or Celtic away. I told the boys afterwards .. ‘listen lads I only have one thing to say, I’m feeling it! The whole dressing room just exploded into a chorus of ‘I’m Feeling It!’ The boys deserve it. We’ve not had as much credit as we deserve but today is all about the Drum. We are the cup upset.”
