'Drugs driver' arrested after late night two car crash on major Scots road

A 'drugs driver' has been arrested following a late night two car smash on a major Scots road.

The alarm was raised at around 6pm on Tuesday, January 10 when officers were called to a collision on the A702, which runs from Edinburgh to St John's Town of Dalry in Dumfries and Galloway.

Emergency services, including Police Scotland and Scottish Ambulance Service, sped to the crash site at Hillend near Edinburgh, as did Road Policing officers from from Edinburgh, Dalkeith and Dunbar.

A 30-year-old man and 57-year-old woman were rushed to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh for treatment. Their condition is not yet known.

Photos taken at the scene, which were shared on social media, show the mangled wreck of a Mini, the majority of which has been completely destroyed. Its wheels have been ripped from the body of the motor of which there are multiple dents. Airbags have inflated in the passenger and driver's seat, too.

In another image, a Land Rover has more or less tipped on to its side and is perched on the side of a kerb after appearing to have ploughed into a pole. A wheel is also missing from the front of the vehicle.

The 30-year-old driver of the Land Rover allegedly tested positive for cocaine and was arrested. A blood specimen was later taken and has been sent away for analysis. The driver will be reported to the Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service for various offences and an investigation is underway.

People convicted of drug driving face up to six months in prison, a minimum one-year driving ban and an unlimited fine. The convictions are recorded on driving licences and last for 11 years.

Cocaine is considered a Class A drug and possession of it can, if convicted, result in up to seven years in prison, an unlimited fine or both.

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: Around 5.35pm on Tuesday, 10 January 2023 police received a report of a four vehicle crash on the A702 near to Hillend in Midlothian.

"Emergency services attended and a 30-year-old man and 57-year-old woman were taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.

"A 30-year-old man was arrested in connection with alleged road traffic offences. Enquiries are ongoing."
