Drug dealer Gary Carey shot at Hilton Hotel in Kilmainham in June dies in hospital

A drug dealer who was shot in an underground car park just over a month ago has died in hospital.

Gary "The Canary" Carey was blasted six times - including in the chest, arm and leg - at The Hilton Hotel on Dublin's South Circular Road after 11.30am on June 24. Carey, 41, had just left the gym in the hotel when he was ambushed and chased through its underground car park by at least two men as he was shot down.

He had been in hospital since but contracted sepsis in the middle of July and his condition deteriorated significantly. And it has been confirmed that the criminal, from Dublin 8, has died.

Gardai had been initially stunned that Carey survived the gun attack in June, the third time he was targeted since March 2021. Members of Brian "King Ratt" Rattigan's gang are suspects in the case, as are the Dublin drug dealing mob "The Family".

Carey had only recently returned to Ireland in recent weeks following a trip away. Carey has been previously arrested by gardai a number of times but was only imprisoned once for 15 months in 2002 when he pleaded guilty in Dublin Circuit Court to drug dealing.

His brother was Darren Carey, 20, who was killed along the Grand Canal in Co Kildare 22 years ago along with Patrick Murray, 19. The chief suspect for that killing was the brute Mark 'Guinea Pig’ Desmond, 41, who himself was murdered in Lucan, Dublin in December 2016.
