Drone photos show extent of wildfire damage on Highland estate

DRONE images have shown the huge impact of a wildfire which burned across a Highlands estate.

Firefighters sent six appliances to tackle the blaze at Stac Pollaidh, in Inverpolly Forest, north of Ullapool, which broke out on Sunday morning and saw heavy smoke lead to warnings to stay away from the area.

It was put out by 7.30pm on Monday, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) told the BBC, with checks continuing into Tuesday to prevent resurgence.

Now, the Inverpolly Estate has shared images taken by the Assynt Mountain Rescue Team showing the aftermath of the wildfire.

“Some incredible drone footage of the burning taken by Tim Hamlet from the Assynt Mountain Rescue Team,” the estate wrote on Facebook.

“Drones are very useful tools of equipment these days being a huge help to the fire brigade in this instance, they could see how the fire was spreading etc.”

In comments, the estate said that the wildfire had been “started by campers”.

It comes after firefighters extinguished a mile-long wildfire on the Isle of Skye – one of 90 to have burnt across Scotland in recent days.

Crews were called to the blaze in the Glendale area of Skye at 12.06pm on Tuesday, with four appliances at the scene at the height of the blaze.

The SFRS said the last appliance left the area at around 4.30am on Wednesday.

SFRS and the Scottish Wildfire Forum have also issued a warning of an “extreme” risk across the south-west, east, north and central Scotland for Thursday.

Deputy Assistant Chief Officer Kenny Barbour, who is head of prevention, protection and preparedness at SFRS, said: “As the warm and dry weather continues, so too does the risk of wildfire, and so we are asking the public to exercise extreme caution and think twice before using anything involving a naked flame."

And in Kilwinning, six fire appliances were sent out on Wednesday afternoon to reports of huge plumes of smoke billowing from Fenix Battery Recycling, a year after a fire at the site in April 2024.

A spokesperson for SFRS said: “We were alerted at 12.42pm on Wednesday to reports of a large fire within a recycling centre on Byrehill Place, Kilwinning.

“Operations control has mobilised six fire appliances to the scene and firefighters are working to extinguish the flames.

“There are currently no reported casualties.

“As a precaution, members of the public are being asked to avoid the area and close windows and doors if affected by smoke.”
