Drone Delivery Service Revolutionizes Great Wall Tourism Experience

Tourists exploring the Great Wall of China can now enjoy the convenience of having their meals delivered via drones. Meituan, a prominent Chinese food delivery company, recently introduced a drone delivery service that caters to visitors at a remote section of the historic monument near Beijing.

This innovative service marks the debut of drone deliveries in the capital city, adding to the rapidly growing drone delivery industry in China, a global leader in civilian drone manufacturing and export. Drones have significantly enhanced accessibility and convenience for residents in urban areas as well as remote rural regions.

The drone route along the Great Wall extends from a hotel rooftop to a watchtower in the southern extension of Badaling, a popular segment of the ancient fortifications. This particular section of the wall lacks commercial facilities and experiences extreme summer temperatures, making drone deliveries particularly beneficial for providing relief items and emergency supplies to visitors.

Meituan's drones are capable of flying in moderate weather conditions and can carry up to 2.3 kilograms per trip. The delivery fee for this service is set at an affordable 4 yuan, equivalent to 56 cents, mirroring the standard Meituan delivery charges.

Upon receiving an order, a Meituan staff member collects the items from a nearby store, prepares them at the hotel rooftop, and attaches them to the drone for autonomous flight to the watchtower. Customers can then retrieve their packages from a designated worker at the watchtower.

Drone delivery services have rapidly expanded in China in recent years, with companies like JD conducting trials for rural deliveries using unmanned aerial vehicles. These drones have significantly reduced delivery times and improved logistics in remote areas.

Furthermore, drones are increasingly being utilized for urban deliveries, with Meituan operating multiple drone routes in various cities across China. The company has successfully completed over 300,000 drone delivery orders, showcasing the efficiency and reliability of this innovative service.

The Chinese government's emphasis on developing the 'low-altitude economy,' which encompasses businesses utilizing both manned and unmanned aerial vehicles below 1,000 meters, underscores the strategic importance of drone technology in driving economic growth and enhancing logistical capabilities.

With the successful implementation of drone delivery services on the Great Wall of China and in urban centers, it is evident that drones are revolutionizing the way goods are transported and delivered, offering unparalleled speed and convenience to consumers across the country.
