Driving warning issued to anyone fillings up their car in the next 14 days

Drivers have been issued an urgent warning if they are planning on filling up with petrol or diesel within the next two weeks.

It comes as prices at the pumps are set to fall in the coming weeks, according a report. In order for drivers to see costs decrease, retailers will be required to pass on a drop in wholesale prices to the prices at stations.

The RAC revealed that diesel drivers continue to be charged an additional 20p compared costs for petrol car drivers. Diesel drivers are forking out £92 to fill their tank on average, with petrol cars taking £81 to fill up.

However, the RAC has said that drivers of diesel cars could see prices slashed over the coming fortnight, reports Birmingham Live.

Spokesman from RAC Simon Williams said: "Drivers of the country’s diesel vehicles have every right to feel hard done by as they’re paying a huge premium for the fuel, which in no way reflects its lower wholesale cost.

"For nearly a month, the gap between wholesale petrol and diesel prices has been less than 10p a litre, and in recent days it has reduced to just 3.5p. Yet average diesel prices at the pumps remain stubbornly high, having fallen by only 2p since the start of February.

"The fact membership-only retailer Costco has been able to cut the average price of a litre of diesel by 4p last week shows what’s possible, but we badly need other fuel retailers to treat drivers of diesel vehicles fairly."

Diesel wholesale prices were found to be just 6p more a litre for retailers last week. However, the difference in prices at the pump for petrol compared to diesel continues to be around 20p litre, according to RAC analysis.

The average price of diesel sits at 168p at the moment, with petrol averaging 148p.

Around 17.8million vehicles registered around the UK are diesel-powered, including the majority of vans being driven across the country, according to the latest Government figures.

That representing a total of 43 per cent of vehicles on UK roads.
