Drivers warned of £5000 fine and licence points for making indicator error

Drivers have been warned that they could be hit with a £5,000 fine and nine points on their licence for making an indicator error.

As stated by section three of the Road Traffic Act 1988, it is an offence to drive "without due care and attention, or without reasonable consideration for other persons using the road or place".

Failing to indicate correctly can not only land you in trouble with the law, but is also dangerous to you and all other road users. The Highway Code includes guidelines for how to use indicators.

As reported by the Daily Express, the maximum punishment is nine licence points and a fine of up to £5,000.

In order to avoid landing in trouble, drivers must familiarise themselves with and follow the Highway Code.

Operations manager at Goodbye Car Mark Royal said: “Knowing when (and when not) to indicate is a skill of its own, given there are no black and white rules.

"But it’s incredibly important to learn when they should be used for the safety of yourself and other motorists.”

It follows the news that drivers have been warned of fines of up to £5,000 for not using their air con appropriately over the summer.

According to rule 237 of the Highway Code, drivers need to keep their vehicles "well ventilated". This is to avoid drowsiness when behind the wheel.
