Drivers are being warned of a common but costly mistake often made at petrol stations.
The latest RAC Fuel Watch shows that drivers can expect to pay 169.33p per litre of unleaded and 183.49p per litre of diesel on average at the minute meaning it is still quite expensive to top up your tank. But one simple thing done wrong can end up costing you an extra £179 per year.
Nerd Wallet reported that the average Brit spends £3,406.80 on their car every single year. With petrol prices costing more than they have in years, experts at Peter Vardy warned drivers not to choose premium fuel over standard, reported The Express.

Retailers of premium fuel claim that it offers performance and economic advantages and can even protect the engine. However, unless motorists are behind the wheel of a performance vehicle they will barely notice the difference.
The biggest change will actually be in your wallet as the premium fuel costs 10p per litre more than your standard unleaded. By sticking to standard unleaded, drivers can save themselves £179.14 per year.
