Drivers travelling 50 MILES to visit UK's cheapest petrol station where unleaded is £1.58

Britain’s cheapest petrol station is attracting motorists from as far as 50-miles away after it started selling fuel for £1.58 a litre.

Dale Head Community Garage in Hawkes, North Yorkshire, is a non-for-profit community enterprise that keeps its fuel prices low.

Motorists have been queuing up to fill up their vehicles as prices are as little as 1.58p per litre for petrol and 1.68p for diesel.

This compares to the national average fuel prices of 1.80p for unleaded and 1.90p for diesel.

The station is also entitled to a 5p per litre Government rebate because of its isolated location.

Word is spreading about the filling station’s incredible value with people travelling from across the county.

Motorists have said they would prefer to wait in a queue while saving money at the pump.

Harry Wallace, 72, from Manchester, told The Sun: “I thought there was a mistake on the sign when I drove past. I just wish I lived a bit closer.”

Another motorist, Andrew Jackson, 34, also told the newspaper: “I've only come ten miles but word has spread right across the area.

“It's the talk of the Dales.”

Abbie Rhodes, who is general manager at the garage run by Upper Dales Community Partnership, said there would even be scope for the station’s prices to decline even further.

She said: “It's been a bit chaotic.

“Everyone has become so used to paying ridiculous prices that there's been a real rush to come here, often from miles around.

“The more we sell the cheaper we can sell it for.”

Record high fuel prices hit drivers in June as the average cost of a litre of petrol rose by 16.6p to 191.4p.

Average diesel prices rose by 15.6p per litre, ending last month at 199.1p.

These were the highest monthly increases on records since 2000 and added more than £9 to the cost of filling up a typical 55-litre family petrol car.

Several supermarkets have also cut their prices in line with the decline in the wholesale price of fuel this month.

Fuel prices in the UK are still considerably higher than elsewhere in the European Union with drivers in France paying around 23p less per litre.

Finland and Denmark are the only exceptions with the costs being around 190p and 186p per litre.

While prices were rising before Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in February, the situation has been exacerbated by war.

The reduction in supply of Russian oil has put increased demand pressures on other producers, as well as increasing uncertainty, driving the price up.
