Two angry dads have been charged with attempted murder after shooting each other's daughter during a road rage clash.
William Hale, 35, from Douglas in Georgia, shot 14-year-old Shelby Allison in the back as her dad Frank, 43, shot Hale's five-year-old girl in the leg.
Shelby was left with a punctured lung after the bizarre incident.
Nassau County Sheriff Bill Leeper said both girls are not thought ot be in danger, but slammed the actions of their "stupid" dads.
He said: "What is scarier than one crazy driver with a gun? Two crazy drivers with a gun.
"Thankfully, no one was killed in this incident.
"But it could have been very easily turned out that way because two people were acting stupid and let their tempers get the best of them. There could have been two dead kids because of two stupid grown men."
The incident, which one witness described as a "cat and mouse" chase, took place on a highway outside Jacksonville at around 1pm.
At the time of the shooting, Hale was near home with five other passengers in his black Dodge Ram, including his elderly mum.
Allison, who was carrying his wife Jessica and daughter, was en route home to Georgia in his gray Nissan Murano.
Both men were seen driving erratically, but the altercation started after Jessica made offensive gestures towards the Hale car.
Someone in the Hale vehicle responded by lobbing a water bottle at their car.
Thinking he was aiming at the Hales' tires, Frank Allison fired his gun while driving and hit the little girl instead.
Hale returned fire, firing seven or eight rounds, with one piercing the teen daughter through her back.
It was one of the family's mothers who called 911 after the shooting asking for help.
She said: "'My daughter's been shot — please help me."
A youngster can be heard crying and wailing "I don't want to die" on the same call", News4Jax reports.
Both drivers stopped when they saw a police patrol car, but continued to argue and fight each other on the side of the road.
The sheriff's deputy broke up the fight before they were both hauled into jail and charged with attemtped murder.
