Drivers left perplexed by multiple spelling mistakes on town's road signs

Road signs in Somerset have been causing problems for locals recently as at least four road names are spelt differently on separate signs which has baffled a number of people and left residents divided. Some find the spelling slip-ups in the town of Weston-super-Mare funny while other residents blame the council for incompetence.

The mistakes can be found on Becket Road which is spelt with two Ts on a different sign and Queen's Way which is spelt three separate ways. Austen Drive is also spelt with an 'E' on one sign but with an 'I' on another just a few hundred yards away, while Ryecroft Avenue is spelt with and without an 'E' in a separate part of town.

Should it have one 'T' or two? (SWNS)

Speaking about the spelling blunders, one local resident said: "I noticed the Becket/Beckett signs years ago as I turn into it most days. It was hard to miss considering they were literally opposite each other.

"I found it quite funny and put a photo on my Facebook profile, and a friend told me that Queensway, which Becket Road is off, also showed as Queen's Way - so I went and had look.

"I then realised there were three spellings all at the same roundabout - Queens Way being the third variation."

This should be Austen Drive (SWNS)

Others have been quick to judge the council for the mistakes as a fellow resident wrote online: "Sums the council up in one word - which is unprintable!"

And a third added: "Someone had a few too many when this was done!"

The Council has also noticed the mistakes and a spokesperson says they are attempting to rectify the situation.

Sometimes it has an 'E' and on other signs it has an 'I' (SWNS)

North Somerset Council said: "We're aware of the mis-spelt sign at Becket Road and this is being rectified. Thank you for making us aware of these other inconsistencies.

"We're checking the correct spellings and if any signs need to be altered, we will raise this issue with our contractors.

"We're always grateful to residents for reporting things to us so that we can deal with them as necessary."

Locals who notice any other errors on signs in the area can visit the council website here to report it.
