Drivers face hour-long 41-mile diversion as major roadworks planned on A38

The A38 is set to close for ten nights at the end of May to enable North Somerset Council to carry out emergency repairs.

The road in Redhill will close between 8pm and 6am on Sunday, May 22 through to Wednesday, June 1. A diversion route set up to accommodate for the closure stretches for over 41 miles and takes an hour and 14 minutes, taking commuters all the way to Weston-super-Mare and back through North Somerset.

There are a number of businesses on the stretch of road set to be closed, such as a Holiday Inn popular with jet-setters heading to Bristol Airport and a number of lodges and pubs which will be affected. North Somerset Council has been approached for a comment on whether the road will still be accessible for users of these businesses, reports Somerset Live.

The road is due to be closed from the Ashley Lane junction, through Redhill and ending at the turn off to New Road.

"The night-time road closures are necessary to ensure the work can be carried out safely," said North Somerset Council's executive member for transport and highways Cllr Steve Hogg. "Our contractors' Milestone will be liaising with residents on a nightly basis and traffic marshalls will be on hand to help with any queries."

The council is taking the opportunity of the road closures to remove some ash trees adjacent to the road which are suffering from Ash Dieback, a fungal disease which is often fatal. A rapid decline in the health of these trees means urgent action is needed to remove them for safety reasons.
