Drivers caught waiting on M56 hard shoulder to avoid Manchester Airport parking fees

Traffic police have warned people who have been waiting on the M56's hard shoulder in order to avoid parking charges at Manchester Airport.

On Wednesday, Greater Manchester Police issued three traffic offence reports (TORs) to drivers on Wednesday, in their latest attempt to curb parking on the hard shoulder. It has become a familiar sight in recent months, with many drivers waiting alongside the carriageway to collect or drop off passengers at Manchester Airport and avoid paying its parking charges.

North West Motorway Police have tweeted about numerous incidents in recent months - previously warning: "The hard shoulder is not a safe place to be waiting for those coming off flights and when caught it is much more expensive than the airport charges". Yesterday, GMP Traffic stated: "Please use the designated areas when dropping off or picking up at the Airport. DO NOT park on the hard shoulder of the M56 like these drivers."

Currently, drivers picking up or dropping off from the airport have to pull into the designated areas. All passengers can use the free drop off area located in JetParks1 where they can take a short shuttle ride to the terminals, reports the M.E.N.

Alternatively, people can be dropped off directly outside the terminals and train station at a charge of £5 for five minutes or £6 for ten minutes. Drivers collecting passengers can park in either a multi-storey car park at Terminal 3, or the short stay car park at Terminal One. These cost £6 for 30 minutes.
