Driver was filmed by member of the public chucking beer cans out their car - then they had a knock on their door

A driver may have thought no-one was looking when they threw beer cans out of their car while parked on a road in Swansea, either that or they just did not care. But unbeknown to them they were being filmed by another member of the public and it their littering didn't end well for them.

The littering incident happened at Lon Towy in the Cockett area of the city. A white car had pulled up at the side of the road, next to the pavement that runs alongside it, before the person inside it proceeded to throw rubbish out of the passenger window, including a carrier bag. A number of empty beer cars were also hurled onto the pavement, before the car drove away. The incident was captured on a mobile phone camera by someone behind the white car, and they in turn forwarded that footage to Swansea Council.

The council’s waste enforcement team investigated the littering incident, which happened on the afternoon of Tuesday, July 12, and were able to trace the offender to their home address. When presented with the evidence, they admitted they had thrown the waste onto the pavement and were slapped with a £75 fine.

Swansea Recycles, part of Swansea Council’s recycling team, posted information about the case on social media, and people were quick to applaud the work of the member of the public who filmed the incident and the council for taking swift action.

Kym Wilson said: “Glad they got fined as now hopefully they will dispose of their waste properly and not be so inconsiderate in future. It’s awful that people think it’s perfectly OK to dump rubbish from their cars without giving it a second thought.” Others said the £75 fine, which has now been paid by the offender, was not severe enough.

A spokesperson for Swansea Recycles said: “The message is clear: it is never acceptable to litter or dump any waste and those found doing so can expect to receive enforcement action. If you witness any similar incidents across Swansea, you can report them online at swansea.gov.uk/reportflytipping for the team to investigate."
